A Palestinian man has reportedly stabbed and killed two people in Jerusalem’s Old City before being shot dead by police.

One woman is also said to be in a critical condition, while a toddler suffered minor injuries.

“The terrorist approached a group of Jews, whipped out a knife and began stabbing,” said Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.

Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad issued a statement, claiming the attacker as one of its members.

The incident comes amid a surge in violence in the city and the West Bank.

There have been frequent clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians at the al-Aqsa mosque compound.

On Thursday, an Israeli couple were shot dead in a suspected Palestinian drive-by attack near a West Bank Jewish settlement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due to convene an emergency meeting with security officials on Sunday and a security cabinet meeting on Monday.
