Bucharest mayor embroiled in corruption scandal

Prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation against the mayor of the Romanian capital Bucharest.

Sorin Oprescu, a 63-year-old doctor, is suspected of taking bribes in the award of public works contracts to companies.

Oprescu, who is serving a second term as mayor, released a statement through his lawyer denying any wrongdoing.
