SLOVAKIA – MIGRANTS

Bratislava • Prime ministers of the Czech Republic, Austria and Slovakia meet to discuss migration and the refugee crisis.

FRANCE – PRESIDENT

Paris • French President François Hollande to hold his 6th semestrial press conference. Among the topics: the refugee crisis in Europe, the preparation of the UN climate change talks in December, security issues.

EU – AGRICULTURE

Brussels • EU agriculture ministers meet. The Council will hold a debate on the state of play of agriculture markets in the EU Belgian farmers are expected to stage a protest against low prices.

IRAN – AUSTRIA

Tehran • Austrian President Heinz Fischer is to pay an official visit to Iran, the first by a European head of state after the conclusion of a nuclear agreement between the Islamic Republic and six world powers.

EU – STATE OF THE UNION

Strasbourg • European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to outline new EU plan for migrants during his State of the Union address to the European Parliament. The proposals will be put to interior ministers at an emergency meeting on September 14.

USA – CONGRESS

Washington DC • The U.S. Congress returns from its August recess. At the top of the legislative agenda will be whether to support the P5+1 nuclear agreement with Iran.

UK – QUEEN

London • Queen Elizabeth II becomes Britain’s longest-ruling monarch after 63 years on the throne, taking the long-service record from her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria.

THURSDAY

USA – FLIGHT 93

Shanksville • A memorial is dedicated fourteen years after passengers and crew of Flight 93 stormed the cockpit of the hijacked plane on September 11.

FRANCE – CLIMATE

Paris • French President holds an event launching the UN climate talks, which begin on November 30 in the French capital.

FRIDAY

USA – 9/11

New York • 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in Lower Manhattan. U.S. President Barack Obama is expected to observe the anniversary with a moment of silence at the White House.

SPAIN – CATALONIA

Barcelona • Catalans celebrate their national day, La Diada, with tens of thousands expected to march through the streets of Barcelona.

AUSTRIA – TALKS

Vienna • Trilateral talks on natural gas in the Russia-EU-Ukraine format take place in Vienna.

SATURDAY

ITALY – MOSTRA

Venice • Winners are announced at the closing ceremony of the 72nd Venice film festival.

UK – LABOUR

London • Britain’s opposition Labour party holds a special conference to announce the new leader of the party.

UK – RALLY

London • A pro-refugee rally due to take place in central London

KAZAKHSTAN – LANDING

Kazakhstan • Russian Federal Space Agency’s Gennady Padalka, European Space Agency’s Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen, and Kazakhstan’s Aidyn Aimbetov return to Earth from the International Space Station.

SUNDAY

RUSSIA – ELECTION

Russia • Regional and local elections to take place in some parts of Russia. Heads of regions in 21 regions of the federation will be elected. Municipal elections will also take place. The voting process will cover more than 51 million voters.
