NASA’s Messenger spacecraft ended its four-year mission to Mercury on Thursday.
In the course of its study Messenger found ice in the planet’s polar craters as well as other elements that scientists had previously thought would be unable to survive the planet’s volatile atmosphere.
The spacecraft was expected to deliberately crash on Mercury near to its north pole.
