Belgian under-21 international, Gregory Mertens, is fighting for his life after he suffered heart failure during a reserve team match at Genk for his club Sporting Lokeren.

The player collapsed after 50 minutes of the game and underwent treatment on the pitch before he was transfered to hospital in the city where he is in an induced coma.

A spokesperson for the club said the prospects for Gregory’s recovery are “grim.”

Mertens, 24, joined Lokeren last summer from Cercle Brugge for whom he made nearly 100 appearances.

Many of his Belgian international colleagues wished him well on social media.
