Welcome to The Corner, our weekly programme covering the world of football.

PSV Eindhoven outclassed SC Heerenveen on Saturday to seal their 22nd Dutch league title, ending a seven-year drought.

Former Newcastle striker Luuk de Jong gave the hosts a dream start by heading in a Luciano Narsingh cross in the third minute before Manchester United target Memphis Depay doubled his side’s lead with a stunning free-kick.

Heerenveen midfielder Joey van den Berg pulled a goal back for his side before De Jong restored the two-goal advantage. The visitors pushed but it wasn’t to be as Luciano Narsingh added a fourth late on to secure the win, putting them on 79 points and beyond the reach of second-placed Ajax Amsterdam

Up and down

Who is riding high at the moment and who isn’t? Let’s now have a look at who has made our up and down list from the last week.

Making the up list is Lionel Messi who reached yet another milestone in Barcelona colours when he notched his 400th goal for the club in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Valencia at the Camp Nou.

Real Madrid kept the pressure on the Catalans at the top of La Liga with a hard-fought win over Malaga at the Bernabeu as Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 50th goal of the season, a number he has reached in five consecutive campaigns.

Marseille are on the down list this week as their title dreams suffered another blow when they lost 1-0 at mid-table Nantes on Friday, their third straight Ligue 1 defeat. Marcelo Bielsa’s men are now 8 points behind current leaders Lyon.

On this day

On this day in 2004, an amateur English footballer had his strike recognised as the world’s fastest goal by the FA.

Marc Burrows, who later said he took advantage of the wind, scored from the halfway line after two-and-a-half seconds for Cowes Sports against Eastleigh Reserves in a Wessex League match.

We might be wrong

Eight teams will battle it out this week for a place in the semi-finals of the Champions League. We’re now going to tell you how we think the four matches will finish, but if you disagree, send us your predictions on the social networks, using #TheCornerScores.

Bloopers

When an outfield player makes a mistake, there is, more often that not, an opportunity to rectify the error but goalkeepers don’t have this luxury. Universidad de Chile lost 4-0 to Internacional in the Copa Libertadores with goalkeeper Johnny Herrera grabbing the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
