‘Lost River’ marks the directorial debut of actor Ryan Gosling.

The film is a dark tale about love, family and the fight for survival in the face of grave danger.

Lost River is an abandoned city which is home to a macabre underworld.

Ryan Gosling spoke of the inspiration behind the film: “It just, you know the film sort of came from this experience of going to Detroit and having had a real romanticised idea of it when I was a kid. I’m from Canada and I just always like, because Detroit was sort of close, but it was also the birthplace of the ‘American Dream’. And when I got there, it’s like that dream has sort of become a nightmare for certain families in these abandoned neighbourhoods, because street lights are being cut off, neighbourhoods being burned down or torn down around them and they’re trying to hold on to their homes. So it just was something I thought I would like to try to make a film about.”

American actress Christina Hendricks who is best known for her role as Joan Harris in the TV series Mad Men plays the single mother drawn into the nightmarish world:

“We didn’t want it to be a political film…because we really wanted to focus just on one family and on their sort of struggle to keep their home, and on their experience of this dream becoming a nightmare. So we formatted it into a kind of fairytale format so that hopefully it would have, it would be more accessible emotionally to more people,” said the director.

The movie is on release in the USA and across Europe and then in May in Japan and Brazil and will simultaneously be available on digital platforms.
