Thousands of Kurds have taken part in marches mostly in SE Turkey calling for the release of jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan.

He was sentenced to life in prison in 2002 for leading the PKK’s armed struggle against Turkey. Reportedly recently in peace talks with the Turkish authorities, Ocalan called on his supporters to lay down their weapons last month.
