Sunderland winger Adam Johnson has been arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.
The 27-year-old England international has been suspended by his club pending the outcome of the police investigation and Sunderland refuse to make any further comment on the arrest.
A police spokesman said Johnson ‘‘remains in police custody and is helping officers with their inquiries.”
Johnson has 12 caps playing for England although his last came in friendly win over Italy in 2012.
