Spanish team MAPFRE produced a superb display to claim Leg Four of the Volvo Ocean Race on Saturday in one of the tightest finishes in the race’s history.

Xabi Fernandez’s team-mates crossed the finish line just four minutes 25 seconds ahead of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing at the end of 20 days, two hours, 31 minutes and 20 seconds of sailing from Sanya in China to Auckland.

This result sees Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing move ahead of China’s Dongfeng in the overall standings thanks to a better performance in the in-port races which take place between legs.

Team Brunel are currently lying in third place with MAPFRE and Team Alvimedica sitting fourth and fifth respectively.

The boats will now be hauled out of the water for maintenance before embarking on the fifth leg of nine to Itajai on March 15.
