At least 61 people were killed in an explosion at a Shi’ite mosque in the centre of the city of Shikarpur in southern Pakistan. The number of dead is expected to rise.

The militant Sunni group Jundullah, which last year pledged support for the Islamic State said it was behind the bombing.

Part of the mosque collapsed following the blast burying some of the injured under the rubble.

Eye witnesses told one media outlet there were not enough ambulances. The army sent more to the scene.

It is the latest sectarian attack to hit the country. Earlier this month six people were killed in an explosion at a mosque in Rawalpindi.
