Argentine playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme has retired from football.

The 36-year-old won 51 caps for Argentina scoring 17 goals.

He is best known for his time at Boca Juniors where he began his career in 1996 and his European spells with Barcelona and Villarreal in the Spanish topflight.

Riquelme won five league titles with Boca over two stints also helping them to three Copa Libertadores crowns.

He captained Argentina to Olympic gold in 2008 but only featured in one World Cup hwelping his side to the Quarters in 2006.

His decision to hang up his boots comes as a minor surprise as he had been linked with a move to the Paraguayan first division.
