A record 40,000 runners took part in the traditional 10 km San Silvestre Vallecana in Madrid. The race has been held on New Years Eve in Spanish

A record 40,000 runners took part in the traditional 10 km San Silvestre Vallecana in Madrid.

The race has been held on New Years Eve in Spanish capital since 1964.

Kenyan success at long distance running is nothing new and the one Kenyan national in the race, Mike Kigen, won it.

The host nation took the next two places with Jesus España second and Antonio Abadia third.

British athlete Gemma Steel claimed the women’s race.
