Belgium is honouring former Queen Fabiola. Heads of government from around the world have attended a state funeral for the widow of the popular King Baudouin.

Japanese Empress Michiko, Thai Crown Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and Spain’s former king Juan Carlos, were among those who joined Belgium’s royal family at the Cathedral of Saints Michael and Gudula in central Brussels.

The much-loved 86-year-old Spanish-born monarch had been suffering from ill-health for some time.

Fabiola’s wish to have a simple and sober ceremony with classical music was granted.

Belgium declared a week of national mourning following her death last week.
