The two-time World champion outclassed France’s Anita Blaze in the semi-finals before carrying her momentum into the showpiece match to secure a convincing 15-7 win over compatriot Elisa Di Francisca.

Errigo dominated her opponent throughout the contest in a rematch of the gold-medal final in London two years ago.

The 26-year-old had stunned Valentina Vezzali 15-12 but lost to Di Francisca at the Excel Center. The pair were level at 11-11 before Di Francisca scored the vital point early into the extra minute to seal victory.
