Two retired colonels in Chile have been jailed for torturing President Bachelet’s father under the Pinochet regime.

Judge Mario Carroza sentenced Edgar Cevallos Jones to a two-year term and Ramon Caceres Jorquera to three years for committing the “crime of torture resulting in the death” of Air Force General Alberto Bachelet Martinez.

General Alberto Bachelet, who was loyal to deposed President Allende, died of a heart attack in March 1974, aged 50, after a long torture session.

The president’s office said the sentences were “one more step” towards truth and justice.
