Germany is playing host to the UN climate confernce this time round.

But the country still relies on coal for up to half of its electricity production.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in Bonn that more work needs to be done.

“We know that Germany – as a country that is using coal to a great extent, especially coal lignite – has to make a substantial contribution to fulfill these goals, but how exactly this will be resolved – we will have to precisely discuss this together in the next days,” said Merkel.

For all the buzz about Germany’s much touted trainstion to low carbon energy,

The use of coal has been a long-standing complaint from climate campaigners.

“What does it mean to raise ambition when we think about Europe? To say to the German that they should announce, I hope soon, when they are going to phase out coal,” said Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, head of WWF’s Global Climate and Energy programme.
