The European Ombudsman has criticised the European Commission for the way in which it appointed its top civil servant, Martin Selmayr. The ombudsman said the commission had “stretched and possibly overstretched the limits of the law” when making Mr Selmayr its Secretary General, and this is raising questions about the European Commission’s transparency.
