Women’s Grandmaster Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova reflects on her journey from childhood tournaments to global success and why she sees her return to Uzbekistan as a responsibility and honour.
Uzbekistan’s Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova, Women’s Grandmaster and former world top-eight player, has become a leading figure in her country’s chess renaissance.
Returning to compete under the Uzbek flag, she was recently awarded the “Builder of the Future” medal by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, an honour she says comes with deep responsibility.
Tokhirjonova hopes to inspire younger generations, praising rising stars like Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Javokhir Sindarov. Looking ahead, she is preparing for the Chess Olympiad with Uzbekistan’s women’s team while pursuing the full Grandmaster title.
