A group of Georgian artists has launched a Portable Museum of Contemporary Art in Tbilisi, in order to showcase a forty year collection of photos and videos.

The museum is, in fact, a suitcase, the contents of which are explained to visitors on request in the comfort of their own home across the Georgian capital.

Young Georgian artists Mariam Natroshvili, Natalia Vatsade and Detu Jincharadze came up with the idea to bring museums to people who do not or cannot go to museums.

The Portable Museum of Georgian Contemporary Art is a suitcase which contains photo and video documentation of 30 selected pieces of contemporary Georgian art.

The curators present the suitcase's contents, giving a detailed explanation of each artwork, and placing it in a global context.

The ticket price is just over one euro, and the money collected is spent on research for the expansion of the museum.

The driving force behind this idea was the fact that Georgia does not have its own contemporary art museum, and the work of contemporary artists can be seen only during special exhibitions.

"Today in our museum we have 30 exhibits, it is let's say a preface to the Georgian contemporary art," said Mariam Natorshilvi, artist and Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tbilisi. She added that the exhibits try to tell "not only the history of modern art but also the history of Georgia".

Most of the works presented in the Portable Museum are in private collections.

The project launched on November 18 and the curators hope to be able to expand their museum soon.
