A twenty year old Palestinian man has been shot dead by Israeli soldiers during clashes at a rally in Nabi Saleh, a village in the West Bank.
According to the Israeli military their soldiers opened fire after dozens of Palestinians hurled rocks at them,
The rally was one of many across the West Bank in support of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails who have been on hunger strike for twenty six days, demanding better prison conditions.
Several hundred protesters clashed with Israeli troops in the city of Nablus.
Israel said strike leader Marwan Barghouti, who is imprisoned but widely seen as a potential successor to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, is using it to raise his profile.
Earlier this week Israel released footage it said shows Barghouti breaking his fast. Palestinians say the video is a fabrication.
Barghouti is serving five life terms after being convicted by an Israeli court of directing two shooting attacks and a bombing.
