Initial reports suggest extremists were behind the blast near a school in Kishoregonj, 140 kilometres north west of the capital, Dhaka.

People had gathered in the area to celebrate Eid – the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

ISIL warning

The explosion comes after an ISIL warning of repeated attacks in Bangladesh and further afield.

The group said in a video that last week’s attack on a cafe in Dhaka, in which 20 people were killed, was merely a glimpse of what is to come.
