A body has reportedly been found in the rubble of a fire at a chemical plant on the outskirts of Lyon, in south eastern France.

A formal identification has yet to be made, however an employee has been missing since the fire broke out at noon on Tuesday in a storage area at the Bluestar Silicones site.

The fire is said to have engulfed silicone drums, destroying almost a quarter of the 2,500 square metre building.

Local authorities said a thick column of smoke visible in the Lyon area did not come from flaming barrels containing toxic products.

A firefighter was injured in the operation to secure the site.
