Senegalese and Swiss wrestlers faced each other in traditional bouts in Dakar on 1 November, during an event in the Parcelles Assainies district that brought the two countries together through sport.
Drummers accompanied the competitors as they entered the arena, and both teams danced together before the matches began. The event also gave the Swiss visitors their first chance to try Senegalese wrestling, with its own rituals and traditions.
For the athletes, the meeting was about more than competition. Swiss wrestler Matthieu Burger said it was wonderful to meet people from so far away who shared his passion for wrestling. Senegalese wrestler Moussa Dioum 2 called for more events of this kind, saying they could offer young athletes greater support and opportunities to gain experience abroad.
Parcelles Assainies mayor Aboubacar Djamil Sané described the two wrestling traditions as a cultural and sporting bridge between the countries.
