Images shared on social media and independently verified show a government building on fire in Karaj, Iran, on the evening of January 9, 2026.

Footage from Karaj shows a government building on fire on Friday night, as anti-government protests continued across Iran.

Images have also circulated showing protesters setting government buildings on fire in the capital, Tehran.

Protests have erupted in dozens of cities nationwide, driven by public anger over the collapse of Iran’s currency and rising living costs, with human rights groups saying the unrest has reached all 31 provinces.

The death toll in the protests has grown to at least 65 people killed and over 2,300 others detained, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency.
