Updated:

Pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted the final stage of the Vuelta a España on Sunday, forcing cyclists to stop with about 50 kilometres remaining on the Madrid circuit.

Demonstrators carrying anti-Israel banners blocked the road and threw barriers onto the course, bringing the race to a halt as riders had to dismount and wait for instructions. Police clashed with protesters near the end of the route while several hundred people remained on the road where the peloton was due to pass.

The race organisers have not confirmed whether the stage or the overall event will be officially concluded.

More than 1,500 police officers had been deployed for the final stage of the three-week race, because the event was targeted over the participation of the Israeli-owned Premier Tech team, which earlier in the competition removed its name from team uniforms amid protests.
