Video. New Jersey begins recovery after deadly flash floods

Updated:

Authorities confirmed that two people died in Plainfield, New Jersey, when their car was swept away by flash floods during a powerful storm.

Despite a rapid response from emergency crews, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement from local officials.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy confirmed the fatalities on Tuesday, saying they occurred in the same city where two other storm-related deaths happened earlier this month.

Flash floods inundated areas of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, stranding vehicles and closing major roadways. Newark Liberty Airport saw over 170 flight cancellations as the region began recovery efforts.

Most flash flood watches and warnings had expired as the rain moved on.
