Hundreds of participants in full costume gathered in Mexico City on Monday to mark the 1862 Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla.

Dressed as Mexican and French soldiers, they reenacted the unlikely triumph, when a smaller, ill-equipped Mexican force defeated the better-armed French army under Napoleon III.

The Mexico City tradition, celebrated annually on 5th May in a popular neighbourhood, has been passed down through generations and was designated cultural heritage by the city government in 2023.

Although widely celebrated in the United States as Cinco de Mayo, the date is not an official holiday in Mexico and receives little attention in much of the country.
