Updated:

More than 80,000 Afghans returned from Pakistan to Afghanistan between 1 and 18 April, following the expiry of a voluntary return deadline, Pakistani officials have said.

The returns are part of a wider effort launched in October 2023 to remove foreigners living illegally in Pakistan. Since then, nearly 904,000 Afghans have been repatriated.

The UN refugee agency has warned that a worsening humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Afghanistan, where many returnees are arriving in dire need.

In April alone, more than 251,000 Afghans returned from Iran and Pakistan, including over 96,000 deportations.

The UNHCR is urgently appealing for €62.5 million to support those returning under increasingly difficult conditions.
