At least 14 people have died after a fire swept through a hotel in central Kolkata, eastern India, police confirmed on Wednesday.

The blaze broke out on Tuesday evening at the Rituraj Hotel and was brought under control following an operation involving six fire engines. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials said.

Local media reported that one person died after jumping from the terrace in an attempt to escape the flames.

Deadly fires are common in India, where safety regulations are often ignored. In 2022, at least 27 people were killed when a massive fire tore through a four-story commercial building in New Delhi.
