Updated:

With fewer than 2,500 pygmy hippos remaining in the wild, Poppy’s birth is a valuable boost to the species' population.

A baby pygmy hippo, named Poppy, made her first appearance outdoors at Metro Richmond Zoo in Moseley, Virginia, USA.

Born on 9 December, the endangered calf stepped outdoors with her mother, Iris, for the first time on 28 March as temperatures became warmer.

Weighing 36 kilograms, Poppy still nurses but has started eating a varied diet of grain, hay, lettuce, celery, sweet potatoes, and occasional fruits like bananas and apples.

There are only about 2,500 pygmy hippos remaining in the wild.
