With strong winds expected on New Year's Eve, the Dutch brought the celebrations forward by one day.

The Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) forecast strong winds of up to 90 kilometres per hour the night of 31 December to 1 January, which would be far too strong for celebrations to take place outdoors.

The bonfires originally planned throughout the Netherlands for New Year's Eve were lit on 30 December.
