The celebrations of Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, have begun with a series of high-profile ceremonies around the world.

In Washington, a menorah symbolising light and hope was lit near the White House by Alejandro Mayorkas.

In Kyiv, Europe's largest menorah lights up Independence Square, while in Berlin a giant menorah was installed in front of the Brandenburg Gate.

Hanukkah commemorates a miracle in the 2nd century BC when a lamp burned for eight days on a small supply of oil. This moment of unity and spirituality is celebrated with the gradual lighting of candles and traditional foods.
