Video. The Antarctic Ice Marathon is the southernmost race in the world

On Friday 13 December, competitors from all over the world took part in the start of the legendary Antarctic Ice Marathon, an extreme challenge that takes place at an altitude of 700 metres.

On Friday 13 December, competitors kicked off this years's Antarctic Ice Marathon, a legendary challenge that is not for the faint-hearted.

For safety reasons, the course was designed in laps around the Union Glacier in Antarctica, looping through the breathtaking but unforgiving expanses of ice in the Ellsworth Mountains.

Italian Andrea Bonanomi, 36, took first place with a time of 3:23:37. In the women's category, a new record was set by American Liesl Muehlhauser with 3:29:16.

Chinese runner Yusheng Ni set a new record in the 100km marathon with a time of 9:20:28.

The next Antarctic Ice Marathon will take place in December 2025.
