In a wave of anger, and in response to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's surprise decision to sack Minister of Defence Yoav Gallant, demonstrations were held across the country on Tuesday.

Demonstrators blocked the city centre in Tel Aviv, forcing the Israeli police to use water cannons to disperse the crowds.

In Jerusalem, protesters gathered outside Netanyuahu's residence demanding a deal to free the hostages.

Netanyahu cited a "lack of trust" and gaps in managing the war as the reasons for Gallant's dismissal. He announced that current Foreign Minister Israel Katz would be appointed as the new Defense Minister, with Gideon Sa'ar replacing him.

At the start of the war, Israeli leaders presented a united front in response to the Hamas attack on 7 October 2023, but with the conflict dragging on and now extending into Lebanon, major political differences are emerging.
