Weighing in at 1,090 kg, the giant pumpkin took first place at the 51st Half Moon Bay Safeway Annual World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in California.

At just 2.7 kilos more than the runner up, Travis Gienger's pumpkin from Minnesota won the title for the second year running.

Although his pumpkin failed to break last year's world record, Gienger still earned $18 per kilo.

Planted last spring, Travis attributes the growth of his giant pumpkin to good soil biology.
