A volcano in southern Japan erupted on Friday (September 20) morning, sending plumes of ash and gas over 2,500 metres into the air.

Sakurajima is one of the world's most active volcanoes and it has already erupted several times this month.

The volcano is on a peninsula near the city of Kagoshima, on Japan's Kyushu Island.
