Torrential rainfall on Sunday (October 21) caused the Valle Nacional river to burst its banks close to the town of Chiltepec, 350 kilometres south-east of the capital, Mexico City.

Residents were seen wading through waist-high water, while troops tried to evacuate trapped residents using a boat.
