At least 11 people have died after a tropical storm lashed parts of southern Mexico, civil protection authorities said.

Torrential rainfall on Sunday (October 21) caused the Valle Nacional river to burst its banks close to the town of Chiltepec, 350 kilometres south-east of the capital, Mexico City.

Residents were seen wading through waist-high water, while troops tried to evacuate trapped residents using a boat.
