German MPs have voted to legalise gay marriage after Chancellor Angela Merkel dropped her opposition to a vote.

The law now allows full marital rights and allows them to adopt children.

The bill was supported by 393 to 226.
Merkel said she hoped the bill would mean more “social cohesion and peace.”
