More than 600 migrants, including many children, arrived in the Sicilian port of Porto Empedocle after being rescued off Libya’s coast. Libya serves as the transit point for would-be migrants from around the region. Many are fleeing Syria or escaping the hardships of sub-saharan Africa. Last year more than 3,000 people died trying to make the crossing.
