The jailed movie mogul was said to be a "train wreck" health wise earlier this year and has used a wheelchair at recent court hearings. He was in custody in New York while awaiting a retrial in Manhattan that is tentatively scheduled to begin on 12 November.

On August 9, police discovered the body of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College. A police volunteer working at the hospital has been detained in connection with the crime, but the family of the victim alleges it was a gang rape.
