"The perpetrator was apprehended by an off-duty police officer," Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said, caling it a "courageous act".

The attack took place at around 11.30 am in the Porte de Clichy area, in the north-west of the capital.

The women aged 19, 24 and 36 were taken to the hospital after the assault. According to local media, one of the victims is reportedly pregnant.

Two were seriously wounded, but remain out of critical danger, Nunez said. One woman was hit in the lower back, the other in the abdomen.

Authorities could not immediately verify the identity of the attacker.

According to Nunez, the suspect made an "incoherent" declaration when he was being arrested but warned against jumping to conclusions on his motives.
