The arrest comes after more than a year of investigations into the death of the textile magnate, which was initially thought to be accidental after he fell off a cliff while walking with his son in the Salnitre caves in Barcelona's Collbató.

Spanish authorities have arrested the son of the founder of fashion retailer Mango for the alleged murder of his billionaire father, who died in December 2024.

Isak Andic died during a hiking trip on the mountain of Montserrat in Catalonia. According to his son Jonathan Andic's initial account of events, he fell some 150 metres into off a cliff after accidentally slipping on one of the trails.

Investigations initially pointed to a tragic mountain accident. However, inconsistencies in his statements and other evidence led investigators to look into the matter further. Jonathan Andic has been acting as vice-chairman of the fashion company's board of directors.

Several Spanish media have suggested that the two had a tense relationship, and that they were involved in a serious argument shortly before the incident. Jonathan Andic is now expected to appear before a judge over the next few hours in Martorell.

Born in 1953 in Istanbul into a Sephardic Jewish family, Isak Andic arrived in Catalonia at the age of 14. Three years later he was selling clothes and footwear at street markets and later expanded his professional activity by opening fashion shops, laying the foundations of what would become a huge business empire in the Spanish textiles sector, which became internationally competitive along with other Spanish companies like Zara.
