Pope Francis has "rested well, all night long" the Vatican said on Tuesday morning.

The 88-year-old pope has pneumonia in both lungs and remains in critical condition despite showing signs of slight improvement after spending eleven days in hospital.

Doctors said Monday he had resumed work from his hospital bed and called a parish in Gaza City that he has been in contact with since the Israel-Hamas war began.

Meanwhile, around 4,000 people gathered on Monday night in a rain-soaked St Peter's Square for the first of a nightly recitation of the Rosary. Visitors there said they were praying for the pope's good health, as well as in gratitude for his 12-year tenure.

The pope's condition was said to be critical on Saturday, after he suffered a respiratory crisis.

On Sunday, he was unable to deliver the traditional Angelus prayer in person for the second week running.

Later on Sunday, the Holy See released an update saying Pope Francis had "not presented any further respiratory crises". However, he remains under observation.

Further updates on his health are expected to come later on Tuesday.
