French police still hunting for gunman after fatal shooting outside Paris hospital

French police are still hunting for a gunman who opened fire outside a Paris hospital on Monday.

One man was killed, and a female security guard was also injured. The shooter escaped on a motorcycle after several gunshots were fired, police confirmed to Euronews.

The incident took place near the Henry Dunant private hospital, owned by the French Red Cross, in the upmarket 16th district of the capital.

The hospital has also been used as a coronavirus vaccination centre.

Paris police have opened a murder inquiry into the incident and have not made any links to terrorism.

Witnesses say the suspect wore a hood and have suggested that the shooting was pre-meditated.

The injured security guard was "seriously injured" in the shooting and was treated at the scene by hospital staff, the Red Cross said in a statement.

The woman was not targeted and "was rather the victim of a stray bullet", Francis Szpiner, mayor of Paris' 16th arrondissement, told reporters.

The mayor also confirmed that the killing was "probably a settling of scores".

"This is not a terrorist attack, it is not an attack on the vaccination centre," Szpiner added.

The Red Cross has set up a "psychological support unit" for all the staff concerned and assures that "the vaccination and the activities of the geriatric hospital can continue".
