The Manchester City superstar has debuted a new look for the start of the Premier League season, and fans are divided. Zlatan Ibrahimovic told Haaland: “What did you do? You lost a bet or what? Block me and erase my number.”

You know you’ve reached a rarified stratum of fame when changing your hairstyle makes headline news and sparks online frenzy... And Erling Haaland definitely falls in that exclusive category.

The 26-year-old viral star of this year’s World Cup has shocked fans by ditching his signature flowing locks and debuting a dramatically shorter haircut.

That’s right, the lion’s mane is no more. The glorious Norwegian locks have been sheared. The majestic blond tresses have been cut down in their prime. We’ll stop there.

Haaland took to social media on Sunday (23 August) to share his new hairstyle, ahead of the new Premier League season and Manchester City’s opening match against Bournemouth.

"New season, new trim," Haaland wrote in the caption... And it didn't take long for the post to go viral, with fans flooding the comment section with their reactions.

Much like David Beckham when he chopped his locks in 2000 and went for the buzzcut, The Striking Viking’s haircut has divided opinions.

"I’m gone for one hour, and Haaland has short hair, sure” wrote one user on X, while another wrote: “Erling Haaland cutting his hair is worse than when Keri Russell cut her hair on Felicity, this looks so awful omg.”

“THE VIKING ERA IS OVER”, bemoaned another.

Even celebrities got involved...

Oasis’ Noel Gallagher said: “You look about 17 years old. It’s good. Change is good.”

Former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola commented: “No Way. You’re lucky you have hair. I would love to have it. I love it.”

Haaland previously joked that Zlatan Ibrahimovic had told him “never cut your hair, because you strength is in your hair.”

That’s Samson, but we move on...

It turned out that Ibrahimovic was not impressed that Haaland did not follow his advice.

“What did you do? You lost a bet or what? Block me and erase my number,” joked Ibrahimovic.

At least we hope he was joking. And we hope Zlatan was wrong, as the shorter cut did not help Haaland during his opening match. The star striker missed a few great chances in City's 2-1 win at Etihad Stadium. Still, at least they won...
