UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation only meant one thing for some – the mysterious “Hot Podium Guy” was back...

In an unpredictable world, some things are certain.

Death, taxes, the continuing enshittification of civil discourse on social media, humanity’s blinkered attitude towards climate change, and the UK continuing to prove that it seems ungovernable.

Yesterday, Sir Keir Starmer announced his plans to resign as prime minister, making him the sixth person to make a farewell speech in front of No. 10 Downing Street in a turbulent decade of UK politics.

By contrast, the preceding four decades saw just six prime ministers.

Starmer’s resignation came just two years after the Labour party swept into power with a landslide majority and almost 10 years to the day since Britain voted to leave the EU. The rapid turnover of leaders reflects how since Brexit, the country has been plunged into incessant political instability.

However, every cloud has a sexy lining.

You see, every time a UK prime minister resigns and adds their name to the seemingly never-ending revolving door of disappointment, a mysterious figure appears.

A strapping ray of sunshine in troubled times. A possible beacon of hope. A viral sensation. A sultry balm.

He has been dubbed “Hot Podium Guy”, and he’s the unofficial harbinger of UK political news. He’s responsible for setting up the lectern outside 10 Downing Street when a major announcement looms. So when you see him, you know a serious bombshell is about to drop.

He’s outlasted five prime ministers... and counting.

“The most stable figure in British politics since Brexit has been the man wheeling out the resignation podium,” commented an X user.

First seen in 2019 bringing out the lectern moments before Theresa May announced her resignation as PM, he was then spotted in 2022 during the resignations of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss stepping down after just 49 days. He was also present to test a mic for Rishi Sunak before his first address as prime minister.

"We need Starmer to hurry up and resign so we get to see Hot Podium Guy again", said one eager fan yesterday.

But who is Hot Podium Guy, who is now officially responsible for “Hot Podium Guy summer”?

His real name is Tobias Gough. He’s a 42-year-old sound engineer from Longfield, in Kent, and for any of you randy lot salivating over his tight t-shirts, he’s apparently happily married to his wife Tina according to The Daily Mail.

Still, that hasn’t stopped the internet from thirsting over him, and even positing that he may be the man Britain needs for the top job.

**"**He’s the only one at No. 10 whose approval rating is still rising", one person joked online of Gough’s latest appearance, while another posted: "I'd definitely vote for him.”

“Just let “Hot Podium guy” be the new prime minister. He’s really the only one who has stuck with us over the last few years!!,” one stated. Another wrote: “Petition to get ‘Hot Podium Guy’ to be PM, as (aside from Larry the Cat) he’s the only one who’s outstayed the last five Prime Ministers!”.

Stranger things have happened. Thirsty Britain has spoken.
