Vafa Musayeva recalls her journey to the world’s highest peak after becoming the first Azerbaijani woman to summit Everest and complete the Everest–Lhotse combination in one season.
Azerbaijani mountaineer Vafa Musayeva (Kahraman) reflects on her journey to the world’s highest peak after becoming the first woman from her country to summit Mount Everest. In the same climbing season, she also reached the summit of Lhotse, the world’s fourth-highest mountain, completing the Everest–Lhotse combination for the first time by an Azerbaijani climber. Vafa says her motivation came from seeing no Azerbaijani women listed among Everest summiteers. She describes the emotional moment of raising her national flag at the summit and the intense physical and mental challenges faced under extreme conditions.
