The Spanish Cultural Center in Mexico City is showing a retrospective of Spanish designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada’s work, spanning the last three decades and including 55 dresses.

The designer says an exhibition is much better than a fashion show as it means more people will get to see her work.

“If you do a fashion show only those invited can go and then the fashion show lasts 20 minutes or 25, in a specific place, and so it’s very difficult because maybe many people want to go but can’t because they’re working or they’re sick or they’re somewhere else,” she says.

Although the dresses in the exhibit are not her most commercial creations, the designer maintains they are “the most interesting ones”, and it showcases some of her earliest designs.

“This was a personal pleasure because these are not the most commercial dresses, they are the ones I see as the most interesting ones. For example I have always played with rings. My favorite dress is a ring dress I started in fashion with my ring dresses, and this one has around 10 rings.”

The exhibit will be open to the public until May 10 at the Spanish Cultural Center.

It previously visited Peru, Chile and Panama.
