The 42-year-old physician, the son of Egyptian immigrants, represents the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. His victory also allows Democrats to retain a Senate seat that had been considered vulnerable.

Speaking to supporters at his election headquarters in Detroit, El-Sayed celebrated the result and thanked voters for backing his campaign. He presented the result as a victory for ordinary voters over wealthy political interests. "We showed that in a battle between the money and the many, that the many really can win," he told supporters.
